Senior Engineering Manager (Hands-on)
Hands-on engineering lead who takes over reviews, on-call, standups and day-to-day coordination from the CTO while building reliability, performance and cost improvements across Runable’s backend and agent platform.
About Runable
Runable is one agent that runs small businesses end to end. It answers on Slack, iMessage, Telegram, Discord, Teams, web, mobile and desktop, and it does real work: builds and deploys websites and apps, writes documents and slides, browses the internet, and executes long-running jobs in its own sandboxes. Runable raised $21M in August 2026.
The role
Building an agent is easy. Making one reliable and cost-efficient at scale is a different problem.
A few percentage points of cache hit-rate degradation can cost us tens of thousands of dollars a day. Agents are nondeterministic, but customers expect consistent outcomes. Small regressions in reliability, latency, or cost have an outsized impact.
Right now our CTO is the bottleneck on reviews, on-call, standups, and the operational work that keeps the backend running. We’re looking for a senior engineering leader who builds, and who also takes over reviews, on-call, standups, and day-to-day team coordination.
This is a hands-on role. You will write code every week. The leadership here is operational, not a pure management track: we’re a flat team of nine, and nobody manages as their only job.
What you’ll do
- Build and fix: reliability, performance, and cost across the backend and agent platform, starting with the edge cases we’ve been sitting on
- Review code and design docs, and make tradeoff calls so decisions don’t queue on the CTO
- Run standups and check-ins, and coordinate the team’s day-to-day work: track priorities, unblock engineers, and keep delivery on schedule
- Own on-call: rotation, incident response, postmortems
- Use observability, evals, and production data to track reliability, latency, and cost, and catch regressions before customers do
- Help interview and maintain a high engineering bar
What we’re looking for
- 5+ years of backend engineering, with strong infrastructure fundamentals
- Production ownership: you’ve carried a pager for systems you built and run incidents
- Experience scaling systems through significant growth (10-100x or similar)
- Strong code and design review judgment
- Familiarity with our stack: TypeScript, GCP, PostgreSQL
- High agency, attention to detail, and urgency
- Experience running LLM or agent systems in production
- Humility and curiosity
What success looks like
- Week 1: ship a fix that measurably improves reliability or cost. This is the bar for everyone we onboard.
- Week 4: you’re running standups, check-ins, and on-call
- Week 6: reviews, design decisions, and team coordination run without the CTO in the loop
How we work
Most products are owned by one or two engineers. Everyone owns their product, its metrics, and its production behavior, not just the code. The agent is central to almost everything we build, so you’ll work across the stack and with every engineer on the team.
Compensation
Competitive cash with a performance bonus, plus meaningful equity.
